Outline
The Chinese renminbi has been increasingly used in international transactions, supported by the expansion of the Chinese economy and the growing volume of oil trade settled in renminbi. However, the U.S. dollar continues to maintain a dominant position due to its role as the benchmark currency for oil pricing and the superior liquidity of dollar-denominated financial assets. In addition, network effects and China’s capital controls remain significant obstacles to the renminbi’s rise as a global currency. As a result, the renminbi is unlikely to replace the U.S. dollar in the near future and is expected to play a complementary rather than a dominant role in the international monetary system.
