Author Hiroshi Hashimoto
Summary The ongoing energy supply crisis, which stemmed from the military conflict in the Middle East, has the following characteristics regarding LNG and ...
Outline The latest Middle East conflict has triggered a unique LNG crisis involving the first-ever blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and direct attacks on export facilities. This situation highlights logistical vulnerabilities, as Gulf LNG lacks immediate alternative transport routes. Asia remains particularly exposed due to its significant dependence on Hormuz for supply. The industry should be shifting towards further diversifying supply sources - specifically towards North America and East Africa - while prioritising multi-project procurement over single-project reliance. Moving forward, stakeholders must enhance price risk management and optimise transport logistics. This crisis also necessitates a critical re-evaluation of the balance between energy security and greenhouse gas mitigation goals.
