Climate realism is an approach that prioritizes pragmatic measures tailored to national circumstances, assuming that the Paris Agreement targets will not be fully achieved. The influence of the concept has been gradually expanding amid weakening in the existing international climate frameworks and rising energy prices. At the same time, it faces strong criticism for failing to offer a fundamental solution to climate change. Developments in the ongoing crisis in the Middle East may strengthen or weaken the concept’s influence. Japan should not be swayed by the trend of climate realism and should continue pursuing emissions reductions based on the traditional “S+3E” principles in a consistent and steady manner.
